Nobel Peace Prize winner and social entrepreneur Muhammad Yunus first started providing micro loans to the poor in Bangladesh, he decided he wanted to lend to at least 50% females initially in protest to the banks' existing practice of refusing to lend to women (even if they belonged to a high income bracket).Β
He was amazed at what he observed:
"Female borrowers brought much more benefit to their families than male borrowers. Children immediately benefited from the income of their mothers. Women had more drive to overcome poverty. Lending to women ... we realised, was a powerful way to combat poverty for the entire society".β β β
His bank, Grameen (or 'Village") Bank, now lends to 97% women and has seen families and communities transform.
